Uploading data

Edinburgh Genomics makes use of Aspera technologies to securely and reliably deliver data at much higher speeds than traditional web and FTP transfers, and this can also be used to allow users to upload data in certain cases.

Aspera requires the installation of the Aspera Connect browser plugin. Instructions for installing it can be found here.

Browser access

If you've been granted permission to upload, you'll first need to log in to our transfer server at:

You'll notice two extra buttons: Upload and Upload Folder which you can use to upload individual files or directories, respectively.

You can select which directories or files you wish to upload by using the dialog box which pops up for your particular operating system. Clicking 'Open' will begin the upload using the plugin.

Command-line access

Command-line upload uses ascp, a binary executable for Linux and Mac which is installed locally on your computer when you install the Aspera Connect browser plugin.

Once you've been given a path to upload your data to, the syntax for uploading data is as follows:

ascp -P 33001 -O 33001 <source> <user>@transfer.genomics.ed.ac.uk:<destination>/

where <source> is the local source file or directory, <user> is your Edinburgh Genomics username, and <destination> is the destination path on our server. You will also need to enter your password if it's the first time you've connected.

You'll need to ensure that the location of the ascp binary is in your $PATH environment variable, or else specified directly on the command line. On Linux computers, this is usually:

and on Mac OS X:

~/Applications/Aspera Connect.app/Contents/Resources/
